Softball Splits with UW-LaCrosse in Season Finale
Chicago -- The University of Chicago softball team concluded its 2002 campaign at home Wednesday, splitting a doubleheader with the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse.
In game one, senior shortstop Sarah Garber (Syracuse, N.Y./Nottingham) broke a scoreless tie with a three-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning to propel the Maroons to a 3-0 win. Senior catcher Jen DeLopst (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) and senior first baseman Liz Reed (Syracuse, N.Y./Liverpool) singled after two outs in the sixth before Garber belted her second home run of the season.
Senior pitcher Kelly Ostler (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) allowed three hits and fanned five en route to her eighth shutout of the season. Ostler finished the year with a record of 11-7.
In the nightcap, UW-LaCrosse hurler Christie McEnerney threw a three-hit shutout as the Eagles defeated the Maroons 1-0. A bases-loaded walk to UWLC designated hitter Kay Kueppers in the top of the fifth inning accounted for the game's only run.
Chicago finished the 2002 season with a record of 17-19. UW-LaCrosse now stands at 22-13.
