Chicago Opens Season with Win

Chicago -- Freshman Vanessa Ng (Honolulu, Hawaii/ Ioloni) won two individual events and was a member of a first-place relay team as the University of Chicago women's swimming team opened its 2003-04 campaign with a 135-48 win over host Illinois Institute of Technology on Saturday.

Ng took top honors in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle (57.21, 2:05.79) and as part of the Maroons' 400-yard freestyle relay quartet (3:58.15).

Sophomore Kathleen Meil (Lisle, Ill./ St. Francis) and freshman Nellie Movtchan (Woodbury, Minn./ Woodbury) each won a pair of individual events. Meil won the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle (5:36.91, 11:31.64), while Movtchan won the 50-yard freestyle (26.75) and 100-yard backstroke (1:11.93).

Junior Emily Testa (Evanston, Ill./ Evanston) won the 200-yard individual medley (2:24.22) and competed in the Maroons' first-place 400-yard freestyle relay team along with Ng and freshmen Sonja Swanson (Rosemount, Minn./ Rosemount) and Katherine Yang (Palo Alto, Calif./ Gunn).
