May 7, 2006 CHICAGO -- The University of Chicago baseball team closed out the home portion of its 2006 schedule with a doubleheader split against Concordia (Ill.) University Sunday at J. Kyle Anderson Field. In the first game, Concordia scored three times in the top of the seventh to snap a 3-3 tie en route to a 6-3 win. Senior pitcher Dan Yeksigian (Downers Grove, Ill./ Benet) held the Cougars hitless through five and one-third innings, but allowed seven bases on balls as he fell to 7-3 on the season. Junior second baseman Tony Zitek (Tampa, Fla./ Plant) belted a two-run triple as part of a three-run Chicago outburst in the third inning. Concordia catcher Mike Sanew drove in a pair of runs. In game two, junior first baseman Dan Cozzi (Park Ridge, Ill./ St. Ignatius) collected three RBIs as the Maroons posted a 6-5 victory. Cozzi delivered a two-run double in the fourth inning and drove in a run with a groundout in the fifth. Freshman right fielder Travis Blane (Valparaiso, Ind./ Valparaiso) went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while freshman catcher Scott Hofer (San Marino, Calif./ Flintridge Prep) went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Sophomore hurler Nathan Ginsberg (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./ Dobbs Ferry) pitched five and one-third innings to earn the win (4-3), before freshman reliever Peyton Leonhardt (Wheaton, Ill./ Wheaton-Warrenville South) recorded the final five outs to pick up his first career save. With the game two victory, Chicago improved to 17-16. Concordia dropped to 20-19. |
