March 29, 2006 RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- Despite mounting a five-run rally in the eighth and final inning, the University of Chicago baseball team fell 13-11 at Dominican (Ill.) University in a darkness-shortened contest on Wednesday. Making their first appearance since returning from a nine-game swing in Phoenix, Arizona, the Maroons (2-8) fell behind 6-1 after two innings and trailed 13-3 entering the top of the sixth. Chicago tallied three times after two outs in the top of the sixth to cut the Dominican (5-9) lead to 13-6. The Maroons then took advantage of six walks in the eighth inning en route to a five-run outburst. Six different players drove in runs for the Maroons. Senior designated hitter Ryan Denton (Worth, Ill./ Marist) and junior third baseman Allen Cooper (Newburyport, Mass./ Governor Dummer) each collected a pair of RBIs. Denton and freshman right fielder Travis Blane (Valparaiso, Ind./ Valparaiso) both had two hits on the day. Jeffrey Thorson pitched five and two-thirds innings to notch the victory for the host Stars, while senior right-hander Brian Olson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./ Glenbard South) was tagged for the loss (0-1) after yielding seven runs in three frames. Derek Manuel drove in four runs for Dominican. |
