Maroons Split at Rockford

ROCKFORD, Ill. -- The University of Chicago baseball team split a doubleheader Wednesday at Rockford College, taking the first game 7-2 before dropping a 3-1 decision in the nightcap.

Senior right-hander Dan Yeksigian (Downers Grove, Ill./ Benet) raised his record to 4-0 with a complete game in Wednesday's opener. He allowed two earned runs and 10 hits while striking out seven en route to his 12th victory in 15 decisions dating back to last season.

With his 16th career victory, Yeksigian moved into a four-way tie for third place on the Chicago all-time list. He also climbed into third place on the school's career strikeouts chart with 157.

The Maroons scored three times in the opening inning on an RBI single by freshman catcher Scott Hofer (San Marino, Calif./ Flintridge Prep) and a two-run single off the bat of freshman right fielder Travis Blane (Valparaiso, Ind./ Valparaiso).

Blane was 4-for-4 and Hofer 3-for-4 in the game one win.

Rockford left fielder Phil Smith's double in the bottom of the sixth snapped a 1-1 tie as the Regents (7-14) hung on for a 3-1 win in game two.

Chicago's (5-10) lone run came in the top of the second when senior second baseman Matt Assad (Gurnee, Ill./ Carmel) scored on a wild pitch after leading off the frame with a base hit.

Freshman pitcher Kyle Schmitt (Hoffman Estates, Ill./ Fremd) took the loss (0-2) after allowing seven hits and three earned runs over five and two-thirds innings.
