October 29, 2005 BETHANY, W.Va. -- Junior quarterback Matt Rinklin (New York, N.Y./ Fordham Prep) and junior wideout Micah Dawson (Grand Junction, Colo./ Central) hooked up on three touchdown pass plays as the University of Chicago football team defeated host Bethany (W.Va.) College 42-3 on Saturday. Rinklin, who tied a Chicago modern era record with four touchdown completions on the day, connected with Dawson on scoring plays of 15, 32, and 51 yards as Chicago (3-4) won its third consecutive game. Chicago scored on its first possession, a six-play, 43-yard drive capped by a 32-yard pass from Rinklin to Dawson, for the only points of the first quarter. The Maroons took a 14-0 lead when Rinklin hit senior receiver/cornerback Colin Carrier (Glen Ellyn, Ill./ Benet Academy) from 14 yards out. Carrier, who had three catches for 49 yards, also made two interceptions to tie Chicago modern era records with seven picks this year and 12 for his career. Bethany (1-8) scored its only points of the day on a Clayton Williams 27-yard field goal with 1:53 left in the first half. Chicago scored twice in the third quarter, first on a 2-yard run by freshman running back Chuck Little (Plano, Texas/ St. Mark's) at the 11:48 mark and on a 15-yard scoring strike from Rinklin to Dawson with 6:58 to go in the period. The Maroons added two more touchdowns in the final stanza. Rinklin threw his fourth scoring pass of the day, hitting Dawson from 51 yards out with 12:08 left in the game. Little, who gained 68 yards on 10 carries, capped the scoring at the 6:22 mark on a 15-yard scamper. Rinklin completed 12 of 21 passes for 233 yards, while Dawson had 98 yards on three receptions. Senior defensive tackle Rob Tamillow (Oak Park, Ill./ Fenwick) collected two sacks and six tackles-for-loss as the Maroons held the Bison to just 111 yards of total offense. With his six tackles-for-loss, Tamillow became the Chicago modern era career leader in that category with 48. Sophomore linebacker Gaby Fernandez (Miami, Fla./ Columbus) led the Maroons with 10 tackles, including a pair of sacks. As a unit, the Chicago defense sacked Bethany signal caller Brent Owens on eight occasions. Chicago's three-game winning streak is its longest since the 2001 campaign. During the last three games, the Maroons have outscored their opponents by a 104-9 margin. |
