Maroons Rout Carnegie Mellon 35-6, Clinch Share of UAA Title

Chicago -- Sophomore wide receiver Mike Albian (Darien, Ill./ Montini) caught three touchdown passes as the University of Chicago football team defeated Carnegie Mellon University 35-6 Saturday at Stagg Field to gain at least a share of the 2005 University Athletic Association championship.

Chicago's (2-4 overall, 2-0 UAA) victory coupled with Washington (Mo.) University's 28-7 win over Case Western Reserve University assures the Maroons of their third UAA title since 1998.

Albian scored on receptions of 8, 18, and 40 yards and finished the day with 85 yards on five receptions as the Maroons won their second straight game in convincing fashion. Chicago outgained Carnegie Mellon (3-3, 0-1) 469-146 in defeating the Tartans for the first time in nine tries at Stagg Field.

Chicago led 14-0 at the half. The Maroons moved 75 yards on 14 plays on their opening drive, capped by a 7-yard pass from junior quarterback Matt Rinklin (New York, N.Y./ Fordham Prep) to senior receiver/cornerback Colin Carrier (Glen Ellyn, Ill./ Benet Academy).

Rinklin then connected with sophomore running back Mike Serio (Antioch, Ill./ Carmel) from 21 yards out at the 8:11 mark of the second quarter.

Freshman reserve quarterback John Kiernan (Joliet, Ill./ Catholic) hooked up with Albian on a 40-yard touchdown pass on the Maroons' first possession of the second half. Albian then scored on an 8-yard strike from Rinklin with 5:33 left in the third stanza.

Carnegie Mellon got on the board at the 1:55 mark of the third quarter when Travis Sivek scored on a 1-yard plunge. Sivek, who entered the game as the UAA's leading rusher with 106 yards per game, was held to just 24 yards on nine carries.

Albian scored his third touchdown of the day on an 18-yard completion from Rinklin on the first play of the fourth quarter.

Rinklin completed 18 of 27 passes for 274 yards and four touchdowns with one interception. Serio had 129 yards on seven catches.

Junior running back Nick Schey (Barrington, Ill./ St. Viator) rushed for 141 yards on 26 attempts.

Senior defensive tackle Rob Tamillow (Oak Park, Ill./ Fenwick) led the Chicago defense with two sacks and three tackles-for-loss. Sophomore linebacker Tony Insalaco (Mokena, Ill./ Lincoln Way East) had six tackles to go along with a sack and an interception.
