Maroons Return Founders Trophy to Chicago

St. Louis, Mo. -- Junior quarterback Matt Rinklin (New York, N.Y./ Fordham Prep) threw three touchdown passes, and junior running back Nick Schey (Barrington, Ill./ St. Viator) rushed for 132 yards as the University of Chicago football team defeated host Washington (Mo.) University 27-0 in the University Athletic Association opener for both teams Saturday at Francis Field.

With the victory, Chicago (1-4 overall, 1-0 UAA) regains possession of the Founders Trophy -- which has been awarded to the winner of the series since 1987 -- for the first time since 2000.

The Maroons also snapped Washington's (2-4, 0-1) 15-game UAA winning streak and moved into first place in the Association standings.

Led by sophomore linebacker Tony Insalaco's (Mokena, Ill./ Lincoln Way East) eight tackles, including two tackles-for-loss and one sack, the Chicago defense limited Washington to just 187 yards of total offense and forced four turnovers.

On its opening possession, Chicago moved 69 yards on 10 plays capped by a 7-yard scoring strike from Rinklin to junior wideout Micah Dawson (Grand Junction, Colo./ Central). The extra-point attempt failed.

The score remained 6-0 until the Maroons' first drive of the second half when Rinklin connected with Schey from 67 yards out to give Chicago a 13-0 lead at the 11:32 mark of the third stanza.

An interception by junior safety Scott Johnson (Montgomery, Ill./ Oswego) in the final minute of the third quarter gave Chicago the ball at the Washington 38-yard line. One play later, Rinklin and Dawson hooked up for their second touchdown of the day to put the Maroons ahead 20-0.

Freshman running back Chuck Little (Plano, Texas/ St. Mark's) scored the game's final touchdown on a 3-yard run with 6:35 left in the contest, concluding a 14-play, 65-yard drive. Little finished the day with 43 yards on 10 carries.

Senior cornerback Colin Carrier (Glen Ellyn, Ill./ Benet Academy) picked off a pair of passes, giving him five on the season and 10 for his career -- tying him for second place on the Chicago modern era chart.

Rinklin completed 17 of 25 attempts for 245 yards without an interception. He hit Dawson eight times for 118 yards, marking Dawson's fourth consecutive 100-yard effort.

Schey averaged 5.1 yards on 26 carries en route to his first-ever 100-yard performance.
