Four Maroons Named UAA Athletes of the Week

CHICAGO -- Four University of Chicago fall and winter sport athletes have been recognized as the University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week in their respective sports, the conference announced today.

Senior Susie Gutowski (Northampton, Mass./ Northampton) averaged 19.6 points and shot 64% from the field to earn Most Valuable Player honors as the Chicago women's basketball team won the championship at the Midway Classic. Gutowski scored 18 points and pulled down six rebounds in a 77-66 opening round win over St. Norbert College, before tallying 21 points – including the go-ahead basket in the final minute – in a 65-64 win over Whitman College in the title game.

Senior Jessica Winter (Wheaton, Ill./ Wheaton-Warrenville South) garnered All-America recognition at the 2005 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championship. She finished in 26th-place in the women’s 6,000-meter race with a time of 22:51.

Senior Renee Neuner (Haslett, Mich./ Haslett) scored the winning goal at the 99:53 mark of the first overtime period as the Maroons defeated 2005 national runner-up University of Puget Sound in the sectional final of the NCAA Division III Championship. Neuner tallied her 18th goal of the year as Chicago earned its second national semifinal appearance in the past three years.

Senior Kay Saul (Long Beach, Calif./ Polytechnic) scored the first goal in a 2-1 win over Wheaton in the NCAA Division III Championship sectional semifinal and helped Chicago hold both opponents to one goal in 189 minutes. The goal yielded to Wheaton is the only one the Maroons have allowed in four NCAA tournament games.
