Maroons Edge NYU 62-60

NEW YORK -- Senior Jason Hicks (Glendale, Wis./ Dominican) and junior Jesse Meyer (Omaha, Neb./ Bellevue West) each scored 13 points to lead the University of Chicago men's basketball team to a 62-60 University Athletic Association win over host New York University Friday night at the Coles Sports Center.

With the victory, Chicago (14-9 overall, 7-5 UAA) moved to within one game of the UAA lead with two games left to play. Carnegie Mellon University lost 88-74 at Emory University to fall to 8-4 in league play, while Washington (Mo.) University defeated host Brandeis University 78-68 to raise its conference mark to 8-4.

Chicago, which held a 27-21 halftime advantage, built a 59-46 lead when junior Brandon Woodhead (Lincoln, Neb./ East) made a layup with 2:56 left in the contest.

The Violets (18-5, 7-5) then went on a 12-3 run, capped by a Jared Kildare three-pointer, to cut the gap to 62-58 with 22 seconds remaining.

Following a Chicago turnover, the Violets' Matt Basford was fouled in the act of attempting a three-point field goal with 3.2 seconds to go. He made the first two attempts, before missing the third. Kildare came up with the ball and attempted a three-pointer which fell off the rim as time expired.

Senior Clay Carmody (Fullerton, Calif./ Sunny Hills) and sophomore Nate Hainje (Brownsburg, Ind./ Brownsburg) each tallied 10 points for the Maroons, who won their third in a row. Hicks reached double figures for the third straight game.

Michael DeCorso scored 14 points for NYU, while Michael Magee and Basford added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Chicago held a 36-27 edge on the boards. Hicks and Hainje each grabbed rebounds for the Maroons, while Chael Clark pulled down a game-high eight for the Violets.
