February 25, 2006 CHICAGO -- Junior Jesse Meyer (Omaha, Neb./ Bellevue West) scored a game-high 18 points and tied the University of Chicago season three-point field goals record as the Maroons defeated Washington (Mo.) University 67-57 in University Athletic Association men's basketball play Saturday at the Ratner Athletics Center. Meyer hit a pair of three-pointers to finish the season with 68, matching the school record first established by Clint Patterson in 1993-94. Junior Brandon Woodhead's (Lincoln, Neb./ East) three-point basket at the 7:36 mark of the first stanza put the Maroons (15-10 overall, 8-6 UAA) ahead to stay, 18-16. Chicago increased its lead to 32-28 at the break. Chicago outscored the Bears (17-8, 9-5) 12-4 to start the second half en route to taking a 44-32 lead with 15:21 left in the contest. Meyer gave the Maroons their largest advantage of the day, 54-39, when he sunk a pair of free throws at the 9:26 mark. Meyer was perfect on eight tries from the foul line. Chicago led by at least eight points the rest of the way as it closed out the season with its fifth consecutive homecourt victory. Woodhead and senior Jason Hicks (Glendale, Wis./ Dominican) each finished with 13 points. Hicks grabbed a game-high nine boards, while Woodhead collected five assists. Mike Grunst paced Washington with 16 points, while Troy Ruths added 11 points to go along with eight rebounds and three blocks. Chicago defeated the Bears for the third time in as many meetings at the Ratner Center. |
