November 13, 2005 WAVERLY, Iowa -- Wartburg College goalkeeper Matt Shephard stopped two of four penalty kick attempts to help give the Knights a 4-2 shootout edge over the University of Chicago in the second round of the 2005 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship on Sunday afternoon. After the teams battled to a 1-1 tie after two overtime periods, Shephard stopped the Maroons' first and third shooters while all four Wartburg players converted. As a result, the Knights (18-3-1) earn the opportunity to move on to the Division III round of 16 next week. The teams traded goals in the first half. Wartburg opened the scoring at the 32:21 mark on a goal by Kirk Artist, before Chicago (14-5-1) answered on senior forward Brian Standerfer's (Winston-Salem, N.C./ West Forsyth) second goal of the year at 42:25. In his first career start, junior goalkeeper Tom Bailey (Overland Park, Kan./ Pembroke Hill) made four saves for the Maroons. Shephard collected six saves for Wartburg. |
