For Immediate Release Maroons Post Strong Showing at ITA Regional Greencastle, Ind. -- Led by senior Ward Bortz (Brookfield, Wis./ Marquette), the University of Chicago men's tennis team opened its 2005-06 campaign with several strong performances at the ITA Central Regional Singles and Doubles Championships at DePauw University. A 2005 All-American, Bortz advanced to the quarterfinals in singles and in doubles with sophomore partner Sasha Deriy (Bolingbrook, Ill./ IMSA). Bortz won four of five singles matches and notched a 3-1 mark with Deriy in doubles competition. After dropping their first doubles match, the tandem of junior Vivek Venkataraman (Columbus, Ohio/ Columbus Academy) and sophomore Bharath Sithian (Staten Island, N.Y./ Staten Island Academy) went on to win the consolation bracket. In all, Chicago players won 11 of 18 singles matches and nine of 12 doubles contests. |
