March 27, 2006 CHICAGO -- The University of Chicago men's tennis team posted a 3-2 mark during a six-day swing in Hilton Head, South Carolina, from Mar. 19-24. After dropping a 9-0 decision to NCAA Division II Washburn University in their first match, the Maroons won four of five against Division III foes. Chicago fell to Kalamazoo College 7-0 on Mar. 20 before finishing the trip with victories over the College of Wooster (7-0, Mar. 22), the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) (7-0, Mar. 22), and Carleton College (5-2, Mar. 24). The Maroons, who are currently ranked ninth in the Central Region, improved to 8-6 overall and 6-5 against regionally-ranked rivals. Senior Ward Bortz (Brookfield, Wis./ Marquette), the Central Region's sixth-ranked singles player, won three of five matches to improve his season mark to 11-6. Three other Maroons -- sophomores Sasha Deriy (Bolingbrook, Ill./ IMSA) and Joseph Tchan (Woodland Hills, Calif./ Taft), and freshman Connor Farrell (Kalamazoo, Mich./ Hackett) -- each won three of five singles matches. |
