April 22, 2006 ATLANTA -- The University of Chicago men's tennis team captured fifth place at the 2006 University Athletic Association Championship Friday and Saturday at Emory University. Seeded third, the Maroons dropped a 5-2 decision to sixth-seeded Carnegie Mellon University in opening round play on Friday. Chicago then won a pair of matches on Saturday, defeating seventh seed Brandeis University 4-1 in the consolation semifinals before edging the #5 seed, University of Rochester, 4-3 in the fifth-place match. Sophomore Joseph Tchan (Woodland Hills, Calif./ Taft) and freshman Alex Winney (Yorktown, Ind./ Yorktown) went unbeaten in singles play on the weekend. Tchan won three matches at fourth singles, while Winney won a pair of contests at the sixth slot. In doubles play, senior Ward Bortz (Brookfield, Wis./ Marquette) and junior Vivek Venkataraman (Columbus, Ohio/ Columbus Academy) notched a 2-0 mark at the top position.
