April 26, 2006 AURORA, Ill. -- In a matchup of two of the top teams in the Great Lakes Region, the University of Chicago softball team defeated Aurora University 6-2 and 10-0 in doubleheader action Wednesday evening in Aurora. Chicago currently ranks sixth in the Great Lakes Region, while Aurora stands third. In game one, senior designated hitter Kate Rhodes (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./ Detroit Country Day) and sophomore left fielder Dominique Marshall (Columbus, Ohio/ Columbus Girls) each collected a pair of RBIs as the Maroons rolled to the 6-2 victory. Junior pitcher Petra Wade (Batavia, Ill./ Batavia) went the distance, allowing four hits and one walk in seven innings while fanning six. Wade then threw three scoreless frames in Chicago's 10-0 win in game two to raise her record to 17-4. Her 17 wins mark the third-highest season total in school history. Chicago (18-10) pounded out 16 hits in five innings in the nightcap as it extended its winning streak to five games. Senior first baseman Rachel Cohen (Barrington, Ill./ Fremd), sophomore outfielder Cassie Wierenga (Worth, Ill./ Shepard), and freshman second baseman Jen Jacobson (Schaumburg, Ill./ Conant) each drove in a pair of runs. Aurora fell to 29-7. |
