April 19, 2006 CHICAGO -- The University of Chicago softball team split a doubleheader against Lake Forest College Wednesday at Stagg Field, dropping a 1-0 decision in the opener before rallying for a 4-1 victory in game two. Junior pitcher Petra Wade (Batavia, Ill./ Batavia) went the distance in both games as her season record moved to 13-4. In 14 innings of work, Wade allowed just eight hits and one walk while striking out 17 -- 10 of them in game one. Erin Watts's run-scoring single in the top of the first inning accounted for the only run of the opening contest. Lake Forest hurler Jen Mattern scattered three hits and a pair of walks en route to the shutout. Melissa Wegner led off the nightcap with a home run, but the Foresters (17-10) would manage only four hits the rest of the game. The Maroons (14-10) plated two unearned runs in the bottom of the first, before adding two more runs in the sixth on back-to-back RBI singles from Wade and sophomore right fielder Cassie Wierenga (Worth, Ill./ Shepard). |
