Maroons Split at Lawrence
APPLETON, Wis. -- The University of Chicago softball team split a twinbill Friday afternoon at Lawrence University, taking the opener 4-3 before dropping a 3-0 decision in the nightcap.
Chicago plated a pair of runs in the third and fifth innings en route to the game one victory. Sophomore catcher Vanessa Pineros (Mukilteo, Wash./ Kamiak), who was 1-for-3, scored in each inning -- the second run coming on freshman second baseman Jen Jacobson's (Schaumburg, Ill./ Conant) two-run double in the top of the fifth.
Junior pitcher Petra Wade (Batavia, Ill./ Batavia) matched her season high with nine strikeouts as she improved her record to 11-3. She allowed one run and four hits in six and one-third innings.
In the second game Lawrence catcher Loni Philbrick-Linzmeyer drove in three runs, and pitcher Catherine Marinac scattered six hits as the Vikings (11-10) prevailed 3-0.
Junior shortstop Jessica Mayhew (Plymouth, N.H./ Plymouth) went 3-for-4 in a losing effort for the Maroons (12-8).
