March 31, 2006 WHEATON, Ill. -- Junior pitcher Petra Wade (Batavia, Ill./ Batavia) earned the victory in each game as the University of Chicago softball team swept a doubleheader Friday at Wheaton (Ill.) College. Wade threw five hitless innings in the opener en route to a 4-0 Chicago victory. Wade walked one and fanned five before giving way to senior Courtney Uchytil (Windsor, Calif./ Windsor), who allowed just one hit and a walk in the final two frames. Junior center fielder Nancy Bugajski's (Chicago, Ill./ Marian Catholic) RBI single in the top of the second gave the Maroons the only run they would need. Senior first baseman Rachel Cohen (Barrington, Ill./ Fremd) belted a two-run home run -- her first of the season -- in the fifth inning to cap the scoring. Chicago (10-2) tallied three times in the first inning and held on the defeat the host Thunder (11-5) 6-2 in the nightcap. Senior designated hitter Kate Rhodes (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./ Detroit Country Day) delivered the key hit with a two-run single in the opening inning. Wade gave up four hits and two runs in four innings to earn her ninth victory in 10 decisions this season. Junior Lauren Hula (East Lansing, Mich./ East Lansing) pitched a perfect fifth inning to preserve the darkness-shortened victory. |
