Case Defeats Chicago on Last Second Shot

CHICAGO -- Ashley Horton's jumper as time expired gave Case Western Reserve University a 69-68 win over the University of Chicago in University Athletic Association women's basketball action Sunday at the Ratner Athletics Center.

Chicago (16-6 overall, 5-6 UAA) took a 68-67 lead when freshman Alex Leach (Gurnee, Ill./ Warren) hit the first of two free throw attempts with three seconds left in the game. Leach missed the second shot; Case (10-12, 3-8) gathered the rebound and called time out with 1.4 seconds showing on the clock.

Horton then took a pass from Maria Jackson and sunk a jump shot from just inside the three-point arc to give the Spartans the victory. Horton finished the game with 13 points.

Chicago shot 60.6% from the field in the first half en route to taking a 41-34 lead at the intermission. The Maroons held the lead until the 15:28 mark when Dana Dempsey's three-pointer evened the score at 47-47. Dempsey hit three treys on the afternoon and finished with 13 points.

Case took its largest lead of the day, 63-57, on a three-point basket by Jackson with 5:32 remaining.

Senior Jenn Kaiser (San Diego, Calif./ LaJolla) gave the Maroons a 64-63 edge with a three-point shot at the 3:45 mark. From that point on, Chicago led or was tied until the final second of play.
