February 3, 2006 ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Jessica Waddell scored a game-high 18 points to lead the 23rd-ranked University of Rochester past #25 University of Chicago 68-59 in University Athletic Association women's basketball play Friday night at the Palestra. Helen Baroody's basket with nine seconds remaining in the first half gave Rochester (15-4 overall, 6-2 UAA) a 37-36 lead at the intermission. The Yellowjackets outscored Chicago (14-5, 3-5) 12-2 during the first 5:16 of the second stanza to take their largest lead of the night, 49-38. Chicago closed the gap to 51-50 when freshman Alex Leach (Gurnee, Ill./ Warren) hit a pair of foul shots at the 7:31 mark. Rochester answered with an 11-2 run to increase its advantage to 62-52 with 3:02 to go. The Yellowjackets led by at least six points the rest of the way. Junior Korry Schwanz (Menominee, Mich./ Menominee) led the Maroons with 17 points, while senior Susie Gutowski (Northampton, Mass./ Northampton) and sophomore Nofi Mojidi (Silver Spring, Md./ Bullis School) each finished with 12. Gutowski made two free throws to tie the Chicago career record of 289, first set by Catherine Fitzgerald from 1989-93. The Maroons dropped their second straight game and fourth in their last five outings. Emily Lyons and Emily Bango scored 16 and 11 points, respectively, for Rochester, which won for the seventh time in its last eight contests. |
