November 25, 2005 GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Messiah College's Cali Pitchel scored in the eighth minute of overtime to give the Falcons a 2-1 victory over the University of Chicago in the 2005 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship national semifinals Friday at Macpherson Stadium. Pitchel's goal, her first of the year, resulted from a scramble for a loose ball in front of the Chicago net at the 97:41 mark. Messiah (21-0-1) scored the first goal of the contest with just 16 seconds remaining in the first half when Corrie Jones finished a cross from Rachel Horning at 44:44. Senior midfielder Monica Michelotti (Los Alamos, N.M./ Los Alamos) provided the tying goal, unassisted, at the 57:27 mark. The goal was Michelotti's fourth of the year and second of the postseason. Messiah outshot the Maroons (18-3-2) by a 17-14 margin. Falcon netminder Cassie Grose made six saves, while senior goalkeeper Andrea Przybysz (Troy, Mich./ Athens) stopped four shots for Chicago. The Falcons (21-0-1)
advance to face the College of New Jersey (22-0) in the national championship
match Saturday at 1:00 p.m. TCNJ defeated Tufts University 3-0 in Friday's
opening contest. |
