February 11, 2006 ATLANTA -- The University of Chicago women's swimming & diving team claimed seventh place at the 2006 University Athletic Association Championship Thursday through Saturday at Emory University. Junior Katherine Yang (Palo Alto, Calif./ Gunn) finished among the top-16 in three events. She placed 12th in the 1,650-yard freestyle (18:23.40) and was 15th in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle (2:01.60, 5:19.63). Three Chicago freshmen -- Sarah Laws (Eagleville, Pa./ Methacton), Kaitlin Roche (Wheaton, Ill./ St. Francis), and Rachel Zarnke (Rockford, Ill./ Boylan) -- notched a pair top-16 performances. Laws placed 11th in the 100-yard freestyle (54.85 seconds) and 15th in the 50-yard freestyle (25.61 seconds). Roche finished 14th in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:34.59) and 16th in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:13.44). Zarnke claimed 13th place in the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.60) and 14th place in the 200-yard butterfly (2:20.49). Emory captured the team championship with 1,166.5 points. New York University (590) and Washington University in St. Louis (531) placed second and third, respectively, while the Maroons finished seventh (165). |
