Chicago Drops Two to Aurora

CHICAGO -- The University of Chicago baseball team lost both halves of a doubleheader to Aurora University Sunday at J. Kyle Anderson Field by scores of 5-3 and 5-0.

Aurora opened the scoring in game one with a run in the top of the third inning, but the Maroons answered with three runs in the bottom half of the frame. With two outs, sophomore first baseman Kyle Schmitt (Hoffman Estates, Ill./ Fremd) delivered a two-run single and senior third baseman Allen Cooper (Newburyport, Mass./ Governor Dummer) followed with a run-scoring base hit.

The Spartans then tallied twice in the fourth and twice in the sixth without the benefit of an RBI as they took advantage of six walks, three Chicago errors, and a wild pitch.

Dennis Vietoris (3-3) pitched six innings for the win before Ryan Fair tossed a scoreless seventh for his fifth save.

Junior left-hander Nathan Ginsberg (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./ Dobbs Ferry) allowed five runs -- three earned -- over five and two-thirds innings to take the loss. He is now 2-4 on the year.

Aurora hurler Steve Salazar (1-3) threw a four-hit shutout in the nightcap as the Spartans (17-21) completed the sweep. He fanned 10 while walking only two. Right fielder Joe Infantino collected a pair of RBIs.

Freshman shortstop Robby Serpico (Schaumburg, Ill./ Hampshire) belted a pair of doubles for the Maroons (16-17), who dropped their third straight game.

Making his first start of the year and second of his career, senior southpaw Robert Wilson (Driggs, Idaho/ Teton) took the loss. He allowed four hits and four runs -- two earned -- in five innings of work. He walked three while striking out a pair.
