Maroons Fall to #26 Carthage

CHICAGO -- Carthage College, ranked 26th in the NCAA Division III, pounded out 14 hits and took advantage of five Maroons' errors en route to a 13-6 win over the University of Chicago baseball team Tuesday at J. Kyle Anderson Field.

Carthage jumped out to a 6-2 lead after three and one-half innings. Tyler Yapp delivered a key two-out, two-run double in the top of the second.

An RBI single off the bat of freshman shortstop Robby Serpico (Schaumburg, Ill./ Hampshire) in the bottom of the fourth cut the Carthage lead to 6-3.

Sophomore first baseman Kyle Schmitt (Hoffman Estates, Ill./ Fremd) and senior third baseman Allen Cooper (Newburyport, Mass./ Governor Dummer) drove in runs in the fifth as the Maroons trailed 6-5 after five frames.

The Red Men (16-8) plated three runs in the eighth and added four in the ninth to put the game out of reach.

David Hermes went 3-for-5 with three RBIs for Carthage. Reliever Brian Long allowed one run in four innings to earn the victory.

Serpico collected a pair of RBIs for the Maroons (8-10), who dropped their second straight game.
