Maroons Split with DePauw

CHICAGO -- The University of Chicago baseball team split a pair of games with DePauw University Saturday at J. Kyle Anderson Field, taking the first game 9-2 before falling 6-3 in the nightcap.

With the score tied 2-2 after three and one-half innings in the opening contest, the Maroons exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Freshman shortstop Robby Serpico (Schaumburg, Ill./ Hampshire) drove in the go-ahead run with a one-out single. He then scored on a base hit off the bat of junior left fielder Mike Morgan (Chicago, Ill./ Northridge Prep).

Serpico was 2-for-3 in game one, while Morgan collected a pair of RBIs.

Junior starter Dominik Meyer (River Forest, Ill./ Oak Park-River Forest) went the distance to raise his record to 5-3. He allowed four hits and five walks while fanning four en route to his sixth complete game in eight starts.

In game two, sophomore pitcher Alex Gallan (Downers Grove, Ill./ South) tossed five and one-third innings of no-hit ball until the Tigers (25-17) plated three runs on three hits in the sixth and two runs on one hit in the seventh. DePauw first baseman Adam Ford delivered an RBI single in each inning.

Gallan (2-3) registered the complete game -- his fourth in six starts. Senior second baseman Tony Zitek (Tampa, Fla./ Plant) delivered a pair of RBIs in a losing effort for Chicago (16-15).

DePauw's Derek Bryant (3-2) threw five and one-third innings to notch the win before Paul Rodenhouse came on for his eighth save of the season.

Junior Mike Serio (Antioch, Ill./ Carmel) went 2-for-2 in game one and 1-for-2 in the second game to extend his hitting streak to 10 games -- the longest by a Maroon this year.
