Chicago Splits Doubleheader with Dominican
CHICAGO -- After dropping the first game 4-3, the University of Chicago baseball team rebounded for a 6-2 victory in game two as it split a doubleheader against Dominican (Ill.) University Saturday at J. Kyle Anderson Field.
Dominican plated two runs in the third and fifth innings off junior pitcher Dominik Meyer (River Forest, Ill./ Oak Park River Forest) in the opening contest. Richard Sullivan delivered a run-scoring fielder's choice in the third inning and an RBI single in the fifth.
Meyer (3-3) went the distance, allowing six hits and three earned runs over seven frames with a season-high 10 strikeouts.
Senior second baseman Tony Zitek's (Tampa, Fla./ Plant) two-run double highlighted a three-run Chicago outburst off starter and winner Merak Metz (1-0) in the bottom of the fifth, but Dominican's George Hickey pitched the final inning and a third to notch the save.
In the nightcap, junior center fielder Mike Morgan (Chicago, Ill./ Northridge Prep) collected a pair of RBIs as the Maroons (9-12) defeated Dominican (10-14) 6-2.
Morgan drove in the first run of the contest with an infield single in the second inning before delivering a sacrifice fly in the fourth.
