Maroons Win Home Opener

CHICAGO -- Junior starting pitcher Dominik Meyer (River Forest, Ill./ Oak Park-River Forest) threw seven strong innings and sophomore first baseman Kyle Schmitt (Hoffman Estates, Ill./ Fremd) collected three hits as the University of Chicago baseball team opened the home portion of its 2007 schedule with an 8-1 win over the Illinois Institute of Technology Friday at J. Kyle Anderson Field.

Meyer allowed five hits and one run over seven innings while striking out six as he evened his record at 2-2. In four starts, Meyer sports a 1.09 earned run average.

Schmitt doubled and scored in the second inning, belted a run-scoring triple in the fifth, then singled and scored in the seventh.

Senior second baseman Tony Zitek (Tampa, Fla./ Plant) and senior third baseman Allen Cooper (Newburyport, Mass./ Governor Dummer) each had a pair of hits as the Maroons (6-8) won for the fourth time in their last five games.
