Maroons Defeat North Central
NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- Playing for the first time since returning from its season-opening Spring Break trip to Arizona, the University of Chicago baseball team pounded out 16 hits en route to an 8-1 win Wednesday at North Central College.
Senior shortstop Tony Zitek (Tampa, Fla./ Plant) led the onslaught, as he went 4-for-5 with a double and three RBIs.
Sophomore first baseman Kyle Schmitt (Hoffman Estates, Ill./ Fremd) went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while junior left fielder Mike Serio (Antioch, Ill./ Carmel) collected two hits, two runs, and a pair of RBIs.
Chicago (4-7) scored four times in the second inning and added three more in the third. The Maroons' 16 hits matched their season high.
Four pitchers -- senior Dan Cozzi (Park Ridge, Ill./ St. Ignatius), sophomore Alex Gallan (Downers Grove, Ill./ South), senior Robert Wilson (Driggs, Idaho/ Teton), and sophomore Peyton Leonhardt (Wheaton, Ill./ Wheaton-Warrenville South) -- combined a four-hitter.
