Maroons Fall in Pitchers' Duel

CHICAGO -- Despite a five-hit complete game performance from sophomore pitcher Alex Gallan (Downers Grove, Ill./ South), the University of Chicago baseball team dropped a 2-1 decision to North Park University Wednesday at Holmgren Field.

North Park hurler Tom Neckopulos (1-3) allowed six hits and one walk over nine innings, while Gallan (1-2) yielded five hits and issued one base on balls.

Chicago (8-11) scored the game's first run in the top of the second when senior designated hitter John Thomas's (Bloomington, Ind./ South) fielder's choice plated senior third baseman Allen Cooper (Newburyport, Mass./ Governor Dummer), who led off the frame with a base hit.

The Vikings (12-15) answered with a run in the second on an RBI groundout off the bat of Jordan Higgins.

Back-to-back doubles by North Park's Brady Josephson and Mike Kuta with one out in the bottom of the sixth accounted for the eventual winning run.

Chicago, which suffered its third straight loss, fell for the first time in seven games when scoring the game's first run.
