Maroons Rally to Edge North Park in Extra Innings
CHICAGO -- Junior left fielder Mike Morgan's (Chicago, Ill./ Northridge Prep) bases-loaded single with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted the University of Chicago baseball team to a come-from-behind 4-3 win over North Park University Tuesday at J. Kyle Anderson Field.
Morgan, who entered the game as the Maroons' leading hitter with runners in scoring position, drove in sophomore first baseman Kyle Schmitt (Hoffman Estates, Ill./ Fremd) with the winning run. Schmitt, who was 3-for-4 on the day, led off the inning with a double to right field.
Chicago (14-14) trailed 3-2 after eight and one-half innings. In the bottom of the ninth, freshman catcher Gino Miglio (Chicago, Ill./ De La Salle) led off with a single and was replaced by freshman pinch runner Ben Nordstrom (Scotts Valley, Calif./ Santa Cruz).
Nordstrom moved to second on a sacrifice, took third on a wild pitch, and came around to score on senior second baseman Tony Zitek's (Tampa, Fla./ Plant) sacrifice fly.
North Park (14-23) scored all three of its runs in the top of the sixth. Chicago tallied twice in the bottom of the first.
Sophomore pitcher Peyton Leonhardt (Wheaton, Ill./ Wheaton-Warrenville South) earned the win with four and one-third innings of scoreless relief.
North Park reliever Steve Kleckler, who entered the game to start the ninth inning, took the loss.
