Chicago Finishes 3-7 in Arizona
PHOENIX, Ariz. -- The University of Chicago baseball team opened its 2007 campaign with a 3-7 record during its 10-game Spring Break tour in Arizona.
Freshman catcher Gino Miglio (Chicago, Ill./ De La Salle) and junior outfielder Mike Serio (Antoich, Ill./ Carmel) led Chicago offensively. Miglio hit .419 (13-for-31) with a double and five RBIs. Serio batted .407 (11-for-27) and notched a .529 on-base percentage. Senior third baseman Allen Cooper (Newburyport, Mass./ Governor Dummer) collected a team-high eight RBIs in 29 at-bats.
In two starts on the mound, junior right-hander Dominik Meyer (River Forest, Ill./ Oak Park-River Forest) did not allow an earned run over 14.0 innings. He fanned 14 while issuing just two bases on balls en route to posting a 1-1 record.
Thomas 7, Chicago 1 (Mar. 25)
Junior pitcher Nathan Ginsberg (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./ Dobbs Ferry) scattered seven hits and struck out seven en route to a complete-game victory. Serio went 3-for-3 with an RBI, while Cooper drove in a pair of runs.
Augsburg 15, Chicago 5 (Mar. 24 - Game 2)
Ginsberg went 3-for-4 with two RBIs in a losing effort. The Maroons led 5-1 before Augsburg tallied seven times in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Augsburg 1, Chicago 0 (Mar. 24 - Game 1)
Meyer took the loss, despite allowing just one unearned run over seven innings. Chicago managed only two hits.
Buena Vista 1, Chicago 0 (Mar. 23)
Senior starting pitcher Dan Cozzi (Park Ridge, Ill./ St. Ignatius) struck out 13 batters in 10 scoreless innings. Cooper went 2-for-4 with a double.
Buena Vista 16, Chicago 9 (Mar. 22)
Miglio collected three hits and two RBIs, while junior second baseman Jordan Onulak (Edison, N.J./ John Stevens) had a pair of doubles as the Maroons fell for the third straight game. Sophomore pitcher Peyton Leonhardt (Wheaton, Ill./ Wheaton-Warrenville South) took the loss with 4.2 innings of work.
Eastern Connecticut State 18, Chicago 4 (Mar. 21)
Sophomore pitcher Alex Gallan (Downers Grove, Ill./ South) threw seven innings for the Maroons. No Chicago player had more than one hit.
Luther 9, Chicago 1 (Mar. 20)
Junior outfielder Mike Morgan (Chicago, Ill./ Northridge Prep) went 2-for-4 in a losing effort. Ginsberg allowed six runs -- three earned -- in five innings to take the loss.
Chicago 6, Calvin 2 (Mar. 19 - Game 2)
Freshman pitcher Joe Pankow (Naperville, Ill./ North) tossed a complete game, allowing six hits and one earned run over seven frames. Sophomore first baseman Scott Hofer (San Marino, Calif./ Flintridge Prep) and freshman shortstop Robby Serpico (Schaumburg, Ill./ Hampshire) each went 2-for-3.
Chicago 12, Calvin 0 (Mar. 19 - Game 1)
Meyer posted his first career shutout and victory as he scattered four hits and one walk while fanning seven over seven innings. Cooper, junior outfielder Mike Serio (Antoich, Ill./ Carmel), and Miglio each had three hits. Cooper and Miglio drove in a pair of runs, while Serio scored three times.
Augustana (Ill.) 17, Chicago 11 (Mar. 18)
Sophomore outfielder Travis Blane (Valparaiso, Ind./ Valparaiso) led a 14-hit attack, going 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Serpico scored twice and drove in two, while Ginsberg scored four times. Senior reliever Robert Wilson (Driggs, Idaho/ Teton) threw the final 5.2 frames, allowing two earned runs with five strikeouts.
