Maroons Defeat Wheaton 3-0

WHEATON, Ill. -- Senior right-hander Dan Cozzi (Park Ridge, Ill./ St. Ignatius) threw a three-hit shutout as the University of Chicago baseball team blanked host Wheaton (Ill.) College 3-0 on Tuesday afternoon.

Cozzi struck out 11 without allowing a walk as he raised his season mark to 2-1. The outing marked his second in four starts this year in which he has thrown nine or more scoreless frames. On March 23, Cozzi threw 10.0 shutout innings against Buena Vista University -- a game the Maroons eventually lost 1-0 in 12 innings.

Sophomore first baseman Kyle Schmitt (Hoffman Estates, Ill./ Fremd) drove in all three runs for the Maroons (7-8). He belted his first career home run in the second, produced a run-scoring groundout in the sixth, and delivered an RBI base hit in the eighth.

Junior right fielder Mike Serio (Antioch, Ill./ Carmel) walked twice and came around to score on both occasions.

Chicago won its third straight game and fifth in its last six outings.
