Carnegie Mellon Defeats Chicago 27-0
PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Carnegie Mellon University's Robert Gimson rushed for 144 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the undefeated Tartans defeated the University of Chicago football team 27-0 in University Athletic Association play Saturday at Gesling Stadium.
Carnegie Mellon (7-0 overall, 2-0 UAA) led 12-0 midway through the fourth quarter before Gimson found the end zone twice in the game's final nine minutes.
Nat Scarmazzi's interception gave the Tartans the ball at the Chicago 16-yard line early in the final stanza. Gimson then capped a four-play drive when he scored from 14 yards out to put the Tartans up 20-0.
Chicago (2-4, 0-2) answered with an 11-play, 65-yard drive to move deep inside CMU territory, but an incomplete pass on fourth down stalled the Maroons at the Tartans' 9-yard line. Two plays later, Gimson broke loose for a 90-yard touchdown run.
Following a scoreless first quarter, Carnegie Mellon got on the board on a 2-yard pass from Doug Facemyer to Colby Whitman to cap a nine-play, 59-yard drive.
Facemyer then connected with Jeremy Doo on a 41-yard touchdown strike on the second play of the Tartans' next possession to give CMU a 12-0 advantage at the half.
Chicago -- which lost its third in a row -- reached the CMU red zone on three occasions, but failed to score as a result of a missed field goal and two unsuccessful fourth-down plays.
Travis Sivek gained 97 yards on 24 carries as the Tartans amassed 272 yards on the ground.
Facemyer was 12-for-19 for 149 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.
Sophomore tailback Chuck Little (Plano, Texas/ St. Mark's) led the Maroons with 80 yards on 16 carries.
Senior quarterback Matt Rinklin (New York, N.Y./ Fordham Prep) completed 16 of 33 attempts for 170 yards, but was picked off twice. Sophomore wideout John Kiernan (Joliet, Ill./ Catholic) collected a game-high six receptions for 47 yards.
Carnegie Mellon outgained the Maroons 421-285 and held the time of possession edge at 31:23.
