Maroons Fall to DePauw 31-6

CHICAGO -- Jeremiah Marks rushed for 79 yards and one touchdown as DePauw University defeated the University of Chicago football team 31-6 Saturday at Stagg Field.

DePauw (3-1) scored on its first two possessions of the game, then reached the end zone on three straight drives in the second and third quarters en route to the victory.

The Tigers took a 3-0 lead on a 35-yard Tyler Mallory field goal on the game's initial drive. DePauw recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, and two plays later Spud Dick scored on a 1-yard quarterback keeper to give the Tigers a 10-0 advantage.

With 35 seconds left in the first half, Abe Winkle connected with Bryan Mulligan on a 5-yard touchdown pass play as DePauw took a 17-0 lead at the intermission. Mulligan had six catches for 55 yards on the day.

Dick and Winkle combined to throw for 176 yards without an interception. Dick was 10-of-15 for 124 yards, while Winkle was successful on five of 10 attempts for 52 yards.

DePauw scored a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter. Eric Lewis's interception on Chicago's first play of the second half gave the Tigers the ball at the Chicago 23-yard line. Four plays later, Marks scored on a 7-yard run.

On their next possession, the Tigers increased their lead to 31-0 when Dorrius Ford scored on a 2-yard plunge at the 9:00 mark.

Following a 35-minute delay as a result of lightning, Chicago (2-2) scored its lone touchdown on the third play of the fourth quarter when junior tailback Nick Schey (Barrington, Ill./ St. Viator) ran in on a fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line. Schey rushed for 56 yards on 17 attempts.

Chicago held a 31:47 to 28:13 edge in time of possession, but was just 1-for-4 in red zone opportunities. DePauw, which outgained the Maroons 305-212, converted five of six red zone chances.

Dustin Hertel led DePauw defensively with two sacks and a blocked field goal attempt. The Tigers held Chicago, which entered the game with the eighth-best rushing offense (260.0) in the NCAA Division III, to 105 yards and 35 carries.

Senior quarterback Matt Rinklin (New York, N.Y./ Fordham Prep) completed 13 of 29 attempts for 107 yards and two interceptions for the Maroons. Junior wideout Chase Pierson (St. Ignace, Mich./ LaSalle) caught six passes for 33 yards.
