Woodhead Scores 1,000th Point as Maroons Defeat Emory

CHICAGO -- One of five Maroons to finish in double figures, senior Brandon Woodhead (Lincoln, Neb./ East) scored his 1,000th career point as the 23rd-ranked University of Chicago men's basketball team defeated Emory University 89-71 in University Athletic Association action Sunday at the Ratner Athletics Center.

Woodhead, who scored 16 points, became the 13th player in school history to reach the 1,000 point plateau with a three-point goal with 2:34 left in the game.

Four of Chicago's five seniors reached double digits in their final regular season home game at the Ratner Center.

Senior Jason Vismantas (Highland Park, Ill./ Highland Park) recorded his first career double-double as he collected 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Senior Jesse Meyer (Omaha, Neb./ Bellevue West) led all scorers with 19 points, including four three-point field goals. Fellow fourth-year Drew Adams (Elida, Ohio/ Elida) went 3-for-4 from behind the arc en route to a 14-point performance.

Juniors Matt Corning (Wauconda, Ill./ Mundelein) and Nate Hainje (Brownsburg, Ind./ Brownsburg) contributed 10 points and 13 rebounds, respectively, as Chicago won for the ninth time in 10 games. Hainje and senior Derek Brannon (Palo Alto, Calif./ Gunn) each handed out a game-high five assists.

Chicago (18-4 overall, 9-2) led the entire game. Corning's three-pointer with six seconds left in the first half put the Maroons on top 48-37 at the break.

The Maroons led 51-39 early in the second stanza before Emory (8-14, 2-9) went on a 14-3 run to close to within a point, 54-53, with 13:52 remaining.

A basket by Vismantas and an Adams three-pointer 34 seconds apart increased Chicago's advantage to 59-53 at the 13:01 mark.

Meyer's third three-pointer of the game with 6:32 to go gave Chicago a 74-63 lead. The Maroons held a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Eric Barvin led five Emory players in double figures with 17 points off the bench. Adrian Sosa and Shawn Bailey scored 15 and 12 points, respectively, while Sprios Ferderigos and Alex Ford-Carther each finished with 10.
