Chicago Edges Illinois Wesleyan 64-60
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- Senior Drew Adams (Elida, Ohio/ Elida) scored nine of his team-high 16 points in the game's final nine minutes to help lead the 23rd-ranked University of Chicago men's basketball team to a 64-60 win over Illinois Wesleyan University Saturday afternoon at the Shirk Center.
Adams hit a pair of three-pointers 43 seconds apart as Chicago (7-1) turned a one-point deficit into a five-point lead, 47-42, with 7:58 left in the contest.
A three-pointer by senior Jesse Meyer (Omaha, Neb./ Bellevue West) put the Maroons ahead 58-51 -- matching their largest lead of the day -- at the 2:38 mark.
Illinois Wesleyan (5-4) closed to within a basket when Andrew Gilmore's three-pointer cut the Maroons' lead to 60-58 with 24 seconds remaining. Gilmore led all scorers with 19 points.
Chicago sealed the victory -- its first at the Shirk Center in five games -- with four free throws in the game's closing seconds. Senior Brandon Woodhead (Lincoln, Neb./ East) sunk two foul shots with 14 seconds to go, before senior Derek Brannon (Palo Alto, Calif./ Gunn) converted his two attempts with two seconds on the clock.
Chicago overcame a seven-point first-half deficit to take a 30-25 lead at the break.
Junior Tim Reynolds (North Canton, Ohio/ Hoover) scored a career-high 15 points to go along with eight rebounds as the Maroons won their third straight game.
Zach Freeman and Andrew Freeman contributed 17 and 11 points, respectively, for the Titans suffered their second setback in as many games.
