Maroons Edge #24 NYU 62-60
CHICAGO -- Junior Nate Hainje (Brownsburg, Ind./ Brownsburg) led the Maroons with 14 points, nine rebounds, and six assists as the University of Chicago men's basketball team defeated 24th-ranked New York University 62-60 in University Athletic Association play Friday night at the Ratner Athletics Center.
Chicago (14-3 overall, 5-1 UAA) trailed 30-29 at the intermission. The second half featured seven lead changes and three ties.
Senior Jesse Meyer's (Omaha, Neb./ Bellevue West) three-point basket with 9:50 left in the contest snapped a 49-49 deadlock and gave the Maroons a lead they would not relinquish.
Chicago expanded its lead to six, 56-50, on a basket by sophomore Tom Watson (Edina, Minn./ Edina) at the 7:07 mark.
NYU (14-3, 3-3) cut the gap to 58-56 when Jason Boone converted a three-point play with 4:34 to go. Boone led all scorers with 19 points in addition to his 11 rebounds and four blocked shots.
Senior Drew Adams (Elida, Ohio/ Elida) hit a jumper with 3:10 to play, then sunk a pair of free throws following an NYU technical foul 45 seconds later to give the Maroons a 62-56 advantage. Adams tallied 11 points on the night.
NYU scored the final points of the game on a Daniel Falcon layup with 2:02 left in the contest.
Senior Brandon Woodhead (Lincoln, Neb./ East) scored 14 points for the Maroons, while Michael DeCorso finished with 16 for the Violets.
The victory was the Maroons' fifth straight, marking their longest winning streak since the 2002-03 campaign.
