Maroons Fall to Southwestern
SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Southwestern University shot 85% from the field in the second half en route to a 74-62 come-from-behind victory over the University of Chicago men's basketball team Saturday night at Trinity University.
Chicago (4-1) held Southwestern (4-1) to a 41.7% clip from the floor in the first half as the Maroons built a 38-27 lead at the break.
The Pirates then connected on 17 of 20 field goal attempts, including seven of nine from three-point distance, in the second stanza.
Senior Brandon Woodhead's (Lincoln, Neb./ East) three-pointer with 5:37 left in the first half gave the Maroons a 22-21 advantage -- a lead they would hold until Southwestern's Andrew McDonald tied the game at 49-49 with a layup at the 10:18 mark of the second period.
Woodhead provided Chicago with its last lead of the night when his layup with 7:55 showing on the clock put the Maroons up 56-54.
Twenty seconds later, McDonald converted a three-point play to give the Pirates the lead for good, 57-56. He then sunk a three-pointer one minute later as Southwestern outscored Chicago 17-6 during the game's final 6:35.
Woodhead led all scorers with 22 points -- the most by a Chicago player this year.
Goran Stojcic paced Southwestern with 17 points, while Mike Powell added 15. Both players were successful on four of five attempts from behind the arc.
McDonald scored 13 points in 15 minutes off the bench.
