Chicago Falls on PKs in NCAA Tournament Opener
RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- After the teams battled to a scoreless tie through two overtime periods, St. Norbert College edged the University of Chicago 4-3 in the penalty kick shootout in the opening round of the 2006 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer tournament Saturday at Dominican (Ill.) University.
Both teams had nine shots in the match. St. Norbert held an 8-7 edge in regulation, before the Maroons (10-5-4) outshot the Green Knights 2-1 in the two overtime stanzas.
Senior netminder Keith Crum (Holland, Pa./ Council Rock South) made four saves to notch his school record 22nd career shutout for Chicago before giving way to sophomore Micah Gruber (Rockville Centre, N.Y./ South Side) at the onset of the shootout.
St. Norbert goalkeeper Mike Rietveld made three saves, one in each of the first two halves and one in the first overtime period.
Freshman midfielder Alex Takakuwa (Davis, Calif./ Davis) converted Chicago's first penalty kick and was matched by St. Norbert's Andrew Winters.
After junior midfielder Stuart Phelps (Helena, Mont./ Capital) missed, Mike Bourgeois tallied to give St. Norbert a 2-1 edge.
Junior defender Jon Cartwright (Franklin, Tenn./ Battle Ground Academy) and junior midfielder Eric Kirkenmeier (Wheaton, Ill./ Benet Academy) were successful in the third and fourth rounds, as were St. Norbert's Mike Fisher and Ben Vanden Avond.
Junior forward Andrew Hamilton (Springfield, Ill./ Sacred Heart-Griffin) was unable to convert the Maroons' final attempt, giving St. Norbert the opportunity to advance to Sunday's second round.
The Green Knights will face Dominican (19-1-1), which routed Aurora 6-0 in Saturday's first game.
