September 24, 2006 ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Junior Joseph Tchan (Woodland Hills, Calif./ Taft) and sophomore Alex Winney (Yorktown, Ind./ Yorktown) advanced to the semifinal round in doubles competition as the University of Chicago men's tennis team competed at the 2006 ITA Central Region Championships Friday through Sunday. Tchan and Winney, who were unseeded, won four matches before falling in the semifinals. Along the way, they defeated the fifth-, seventh-, and ninth-seeded tandems. Senior Vivek Venkataraman (Columbus, Ohio/ Columbus Academy) and freshman Steve Saltarelli (Lake Bluff, Ill./ Lake Forest) won two of three matches to reach the round of 16. The duo led 4-1 in its final match before dropping an 8-5 decision to the eventual champions. In singles play, Tchan and Saltarelli both won two of three matches to reach the round of 32. |
