Maroons Split Four at IWU Tournament

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- The 19th-ranked University of Chicago softball team went 2-2 at the Illinois Wesleyan University Tournament. On Saturday, the Maroons fell to Maryville (Mo.) University 10-3 before rebounding for a 10-9 extra-innings decision over Webster University. On Sunday, Chicago lost 12-2 to Washington (Mo.) University and defeated Webster 6-4.

Maryville (Mo.) 10, Chicago 3 (April 14)
A bases-loaded walk to freshman second baseman Jillian Lenson (Newton, Mass./ South) gave Chicago a 3-2 lead after five and one-half innings, but Maryville exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the fifth en route to the win. Senior pitcher Petra Wade (Batavia, Ill./ Batavia) struck out a team season high 10 batters.

Chicago 10, Webster 9 (April 14)
Senior shortstop Jessica Mayhew (Plymouth, N.H./ Plymouth) doubled home the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Maroons trailed 8-3 entering the bottom of the fifth inning before rallying to force the extra frames. Junior catcher Vanessa Pineros (Mukilteo, Wash./ Kamiak) and freshman outfielder Kathleen Duffy (Hoffman Estates, Ill./ Barrington) both homered.

Washington (Mo.) 12, Chicago 2 (April 15)
The Bears tallied six times in the third inning and added six more in the fifth. Mayhew belted a solo home run.

Chicago 6, Webster 4 (April 15)
Freshman pitcher Lauren White (Oakland, Calf./ Bentley School) tossed five innings to earn the victory and went 3-for-4 with a run and and RBI. Senior center fielder Nancy Bugajski (Chicago, Ill./ Marian Catholic) also went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
