Maroons Sweep Lake Forest
LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- The University of Chicago softball team jumped out to early leads and held on in both games en route to a doubleheader sweep Tuesday at Lake Forest College.
Chicago took the first game 4-3 and won the nightcap 7-4 to record its first sweep in its last five twinbills.
The Maroons led 4-0 after four and one-half innings in the opener. Senior pitcher Petra Wade (Batavia, Ill./ Batavia) delivered run-scoring singles in the first and third innings before freshman right fielder Lauren White (Oakland, Calf./ Bentley School) slugged a two-run home run -- her second of the year -- in the fifth.
Wade went the distance to raise her record to 12-5 and move into a tie for third place on the school's all-time victory list with the 47th of her career.
Leading 3-2 after five frames in game two, Chicago (20-8) put the game away on junior left fielder Dominique Marshall's (Westerville, Ohio/ Columbus School for Girls) sixth inning grand slam -- her second home run of the season.
White (4-3) recorded the victory with three innings in relief as the game was called after six inings because of darkness.
Lake Forest dropped to 14-14.
