Maroons Sweep North Central
NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- In its first action since returning from its season-opening Spring Break trip in Florida, the University of Chicago softball team defeated host North Central College 3-1 and 4-2 in doubleheader competition on Tuesday afternoon.
In the opener, senior pitcher Petra Wade (Batavia, Ill./ Batavia) raised her record to 6-1 as she scattered five hits over seven innings in a 3-1 Chicago victory.
The Maroons plated all three of their runs in the top of the sixth inning. Junior catcher Vanessa Pineros (Mukilteo, Wash./ Kamiak) delivered an RBI triple and scored on a double off the bat of sophomore second baseman Jen Jacobson (Schaumburg, Ill./ Conant). Jacobson came around to score on junior left fielder Dominique Marshall's (Westerville, Ohio/ Columbus Girls) RBI double.
Pineros drove in a run with a double and scored on a base hit by freshman Lauren White (Oakland, Calf./ Bentley School) as part of a three-run outburst in the top of the third inning in game two.
Junior first baseman Cassie Wierenga (Worth, Ill./ Shepard) gave the Maroons (10-2) an insurance run when she belted her second home run of the year in the top of the seventh.
Senior hurler Lauren Hula (East Lansing, Mich./ East Lansing) allowed four hits and two runs -- one earned -- in 5.1 frames en route to her first victory of the season (1-0). White retired six of the eight batters she faced in the final 1.2 innings to notch her first career save.
