Two Maroons Named UAA Athlete of the Week
CHICAGO -- University of Chicago senior wrestler Phil Kruzel (Elmhurst, Ill./ Fenwick) and freshman men's tennis player Garrett Brinker (Granger, Ind./ Penn) have been selected as the University Athletic Association Athletes of the Week in their respective sports, the conference announced today.
Kruzel garnered All-America recognition at the 2007 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championship. Unseeded at 165 pounds, Kruzel won a pair of bouts in the consolation bracket en route to an eighth-place finish. He collected his fourth UAA Athlete of the Week award of the season and the fifth of his career.
Brinker, who received his second UAA weekly citation of the year, pulled out a three-set win at third singles and notched an 8-4 decision at second doubles with freshman Noah Schneider (Jericho, N.Y./ Jericho) as the Maroons posted their first win over a nationally-ranked opponent this season with a 6-3 triumph over 25th-ranked Carthage College.
