Four Maroons Earn UAA Weekly Accolades
CHICAGO -- Four University of Chicago student-athletes received University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week honors in their respective sports, the conference announced today.
Junior outfielder Mike Morgan (Chicago, Ill./ Northridge Prep) and junior pitcher Dominik Meyer (River Forest, Ill./ Oak Park-River Forest) were chosen in baseball, while junior Zach Rodgers (Nashville, Tenn./ University) and freshman Nicole Murphy (Coppell, Texas/ Coppell) were recognized in men's and women's outdoor track & field, respectively.
Morgan batted .450 (9-for-20) in six games as the Maroons posted a 3-3 mark. He scored three runs and collected three RBIs, including a walk-off bases loaded single in the bottom of the 10th inning in a 4-3 win over North Park University.
On the season, Morgan is batting .379 in 26 games -- 18 as a starter.
Meyer notched a complete-game victory and recorded a save in two appearances for the Maroons. After pitching a scoreless ninth inning for the save in a 6-3 win over Benedictine (Ill.) University, he tossed a four-hitter in a 9-2 win over DePauw University in the opening game of a doubleheader, striking out four batters.
With a 1.84 earned run average in 53.2 innings, Meyer -- who made his last start of the year against DePauw -- has broken the school’s 27-year old record for best season ERA.
Rodgers turned in a season-best performance in the long jump at the Butler University Twilight Invitational, winning the event with a distance of 6.78 meters.
Murphy established a school-record and met the NCAA Division III provisional qualifying standard in the shot put at the Butler Twilight Meet. Murphy was the top Division III performer in the 20-competitor field, finishing sixth with a throw of 12.84 meters. She also finished 11th in the hammer throw with a distance of 45.27 meters, narrowly missing the provisional qualifying standard.
