Chicago Nets Four UAA Athletes of the Week
CHICAGO -- For the second straight week, four University of Chicago student-athletes have received University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week recognition in their respective sports, the conference announced today.
Senior third baseman Allen Cooper (Newburyport, Mass./ Governor Dummer) and senior pitcher Dan Cozzi (Park Ridge, Ill./ St. Ignatius) were selected in baseball, while seniors Emil Bojanov (Sofia, Bulgaria/ Dulaney, Md.) and Abby Sheldon (Durham, N.C./ Science & Math) were recognized in men's and women's outdoor track & field, respectively.
Playing his final collegiate game, Cooper went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a run batted in as the Maroons defeated North Central College 11-4. He finished the season with a .333 batting average and a team-high 23 RBIs.
Cozzi pitched eight and one-third innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits in his final collegiate start in the Maroons' win over North Central. The victory marked Cozzi's sixth of the season and 14th of his career -- tying him for seventh place on the Chicago all-time list.
Bojanov surpassed the NCAA Division III automatic qualifying standard in the 1,500-meter run at the North Central/Dr. Keeler Invitational, finishing fourth in a field of 71 runners with a time of 3:50.25.
Sheldon topped a field of 17 runners to win the 10,000-meter run at the North Central/Dr. Keeler Invitational, posting an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time of 36:43.41.
