Maroons Fall to Brandeis 57-48

CHICAGO -- Carmela Breslin scored all 11 of her points in the second half as 17th-ranked Brandeis University defeated the top-ranked University of Chicago 57-48 in University Athletic Association women's basketball play Sunday at the Ratner Athletics Center.

Junior Nofi Mojidi (Silver Spring, Md./ Bullis School) scored eight of her team-high 12 points in the first stanza to help give Chicago (16-2 overall, 5-2 UAA) a 22-19 edge at the intermission.

The Maroons maintained the lead until Breslin's three-point basket -- her first of three on the day -- put the Judges on top 33-31 with 11:14 remaining in the contest.

Breslin, who did not attempt a shot in the first half, hit two more three-pointers during the game's next 2:32 as Brandeis (14-3, 4-3) took a 39-35 lead with 8:42 left.

The Judges increased their lead to eight points, 49-41, on Caitlin Malcolm's layup at the 2:32 mark. Malcolm led all scorers with 14 points to go along with 10 rebounds.

Chicago closed to within three points, 51-48, when senior Korry Schwanz (Menominee, Mich./ Menominee) sunk a three-pointer with 37 seconds to play. Schwanz finished with 11 points.

Brandeis then shot 6-for-6 from the foul line in the game's final 33 seconds to seal the victory and send the Maroons to their second loss in as many games after starting the year 16-0.

The Judges were 11-of-13 (85%) from the free throw line on the day, while Chicago connected on 11 of 22 tries (50%). The Maroons shot a season-low 27% from the field, including 1-of-11 from three-point distance.

Freshman Molly Hackney (East Lansing, Mich./ Lansing Catholic) scored 10 points for the Maroons, while Alison Chase added 10 for Brandeis. Chase was 4-for-4 from the free throw line in the contest's final 43 seconds.
