Chicago Defeats Carthage 72-53; Improves to 9-0

CHICAGO -- Freshman Molly Hackney (East Lansing, Mich./ Lansing Catholic) scored 18 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and blocked three shots as the 18th-ranked University of Chicago women's basketball team defeated Carthage College 72-53 Monday at the Ratner Athletics Center.

Playing their final game of the calendar year, the Maroons improved to 9-0 on the season with their 24th consecutive non-conference victory.

Chicago led the entire contest. In the first half, the Maroons built a 32-18 lead before Carthage (5-3) went on an 11-0 run to cut the gap to 32-29. Chicago then outscored the Lady Reds 8-3 during the final 2:27 en route to a 40-32 halftime advantage.

The Maroons held a 56-47 edge with 7:33 remaining in the game when they went on a 11-2 run to put the game out of reach, 67-49, at the 3:25 mark.

Hackney hit eight of 17 shots from the field en route to her career-high 18 points. She also collected three steals.

Junior Nofi Mojidi (Silver Spring, Md./ Bullis) led all scorers with 22 points for her fourth 20-point effort of the season.

Senior Korry Schwanz (Menominee, Mich./ Menominee) joined Hackney and Mojidi in double digits with 16 points.

Katie Jarger led three Lady Reds in double figures with 14 points. Lisa Gartelos added 13 points off the bench, while Shana Lieberman chipped in 10.
