Leach, Rapier Guide Maroons Past Case

CHICAGO -- Junior Nicaya Rapier (Munster, Ind./ Bishop Noll) turned in a double-double and sophomore Alex Leach (Gurnee, Ill./ Warren) came off the bench to score 16 points as the 16th-ranked University of Chicago women's basketball team defeated Case Western Reserve University 71-60 in University Athletic Association play Friday at the Ratner Athletics Center.

Rapier scored 12 points and grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds to notch her fourth double-double of the year. Leach connected on seven of 11 shots from the field en route to her team-high 16 points. She also contributed six boards and four assists.

Chicago (17-4 overall, 6-4 UAA) trailed 14-13 early in the contest before taking a 36-31 lead at the intermission.

The Maroons led 50-47 midway through the second stanza when they went on an 8-0 run -- including five points from Leach -- to match their largest lead of the night, 58-47, at the 7:43 mark.

Case (9-12, 1-9) closed to within four points, 64-60, on a pair of free throws from Dana Dempsey with 3:09 to go, but Chicago scored the game's final seven points. Dempsey led all scorers with 19 points, including five three-point field goals.

Freshman Molly Hackney (East Lansing, Mich./ Catholic) and senior Korry Schwanz (Menominee, Mich./ Menominee) also finished in double figures for Chicago with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Hackney collected four blocked shots.

Colleen Martin contributed 11 points and nine rebounds off the bench for the Spartans.

Chicago posted a 56-36 edge on the boards and held Case to a .297 field goal percentage as it snapped a four-game losing streak.
